Reiki, pronounced 'Ray - Key' , is a japanese word meaning Univrsal Energy. Rei means 'Universal wisdom' and Ki means 'Life energy'. Reiki is therefore vital life energy guided by Universal Wisdom.
Reiki is a powerful tool for physical, mental, emotional and spiritual healing and balancing whilst greatly enhancing personal growth.
The 'Ki' energy is the vital flowing life force contained in all life. It is a whole and complete umlimited energy. All that is needed to receive the energy is a desire to receive it.
Most cultures and religions have a term which corresponds to Ki, for example;
Chi - Chinese
Light or the Holy Ghost - Christian
Prana - Hindu and yoga
Mana - The Kahunas of Hawaii
Fluid of Life - Alchemy
Jesod - Jewish Kabbalistic
Orgon Energy - Wihelm Reich
Wakan - Sioux
All these terms refer to the same energy. All different systems require different methods of contacting this energy. Reiki is a very specific way of channelling this energy requiring only an attunement to the energy and the intention to use it. It can be learned by everyone. It is one of the easiest and most effective methods of natural healing.
Reiki can be used to treat anything on any level and is an effective method of maintaining a balanced well-being. Reiki is universal and is not connected to any religion or belief system, but embraces and enhances all such beliefs, bringing greater understanding and a clearer direction. Indeed reiki is Light and as such is a very powerful tool for lifting the many veils of intellectual interpretation of Religion, allowing the essence to shine through. It puts you more in touch with your faith or religion, allowing your ascent to a plateau where all things are seen with greater clarity.
A point worth mentioning in the context of religion is that you do not have to believe in God to practice Reiki, just love. It is a constant connection between you and the Universal Light, whether that be God or your Higher Self or simply the pulse and rhythm of nature.
Reiki Level one practice is based on a 'hands - on' system of healing. Everyone will instinctively place a hand on an area of the body where there is pain or injury. When you have Reiki this action will trigger, instant, recognisable healing power, this power can be used for healing others, for self healing, animals and plants, the Earth, the Universe and as many other things you can think of.
Although it works gently and effectively on physical healing, Reiki works at a much deeper level where there may be a deep mental, emotional and psychic blocks or imbalances which may be causing the physical problem and must be released. It works at the casual level of illness , not just the symptoms, whilst wholling the person by balancing energies and cleansing toxins.
Remember, Reiki is not just for when you are ill, it helps you to live your life at your own highest level, restoring control and balance.
Reiki is a very effective system for stress-release, frequently altering attitudes and balancing the personality. Equilibrium of chakra energy centres and vital meridians is established in the physical and the finer energy body.
Another advantage of Reiki is, because it helps to maintain good health on all levels, it reduces the cost of health care and drugs and will also help to control the anticipation of illness which will so often cause it.
Reiki is a completely natural and perfectly safe system of healing which can never do harm as the receiver is taking what is required, the healer not forcing it.
Where possible you must always have the permission of the person to be healed; free - will is a paramount in any form of healing. Some people do not want to healed and you must not try to interfere with there rights. When it is given, it will assist the recipient in whatever way will facilitate growth. For example, Reiki will not give an arm to someone who has lost one, but it will help the recipient to cope better and develop new forms of living and expression in his or her situation. In chronic cases where death is imminent, Reiki is a great help in coping with the various experiences presenting themselves and assisting with a peaceful, healing transition.
Due to the fact that Reiki is flowing though you and not from you, it is not reliant on a particular state of mind or body, it is not limited by our personality. It is always there, ready to be activated by anyone who has an attunement from a qualified Reki Master. Remember also that Reiki is not taught by just anyone. You must be precisely attuned by a fully trained and certified Reiki Master in order to correctly activate the energy.
Dr. Mikao Usui
Reiki is older than any written account, but the modern story of Reiki begins in the mid 1800's with Dr. Mikao Usui in Kyoto, Japan. Dr. Usui was searching for the skill of healing. He could not find any answers in Japan so travelled to the USA where he studied Theology at the University of Chicago. During this time he found no real answers to his questions, the bishops he approached only stating that religion heals the spirit, not the body.
Eventually, Dr.Usui returned to Japan to study Buddhism which had any references to healing so he learned Chinese and Sanskrit to be able to understand the scriptures in their native languages. He settled in a Zen Buddhist Monastry in Kyoto and spent many years studying the Sutras. Eventually he found a formula for healing, but it was not complete, it was written 2,500 years ago and could not be fully interpreted.
Dr.Usui decided to undergo three weeks of fasting and meditation on the nearby holy site of Mount Kor-Yama to ask for guidance. He picked a spot and laid out 21 stones to act as a calendar and he threw one away each morning. Early on the morning of the 21st day just before dawn, he saw a beam of light which moved towards him faster and faster, growing larger and larger. He got up to run, but decided to accept this as an answer from God, even if it killed him. The light struck his eyebrow centre and knocked him down unconcious. He saw bubbles, millions of bubbles moving from left to right in every colour of the rainbow, finally came the Reiki symbols in white and gold. As each symbol appeared he was given instructions on how to use it. When he opened his eyes it was broad daylight, the middle of the morning.
As he walked down the hill he experienced what he called his Four Miracles. Firstly, he stubbed his toe and instinctively put his hands around it. He felt heat and instantly found that his toe was healed. Secondly, upon reaching the base of the mountain he was able to eat a full breakfast at a serving house, which was usually not a good idea after 21 days of fasting. Thirdly, the young girl serving him had chronic toothache. He placed his hands on her face and the pain was relieved. Finally, upon returning to the monastery he was told the bishop was in bed with severe arthritis , he sat on the bed with his hands on, relaying his experience to the bishop, and the arthritis was healed.
Dr. Usui decided to go and heal the beggars of Kyoto , living in the beggars' quarters for several years. After a while he saw the faces of those he had healed, returning, angry that they would now have to work instead of begging for a living. Dr.Usui was very disheartened by this and left. This resulted in Dr.Usui developing the Five Principles Of Reiki and the belief that reiki should be not be given freely, but should be paid for or exchanged in order to appreciate and respect its power.
Dr.Usui then became a pilgrim spreading the word of reiki throughout Japan. By his death in 1930 he had initiated 18 Reiki Masters, one of them being Chujiro Hayashi, who he named as his successor.
Chujiro Hayashi opened the first Reiki clinic in Tokyo where a very sick lady came for treatment. Her name was Hawayo Takata. After a series of Reiki sessions she was healed of her various ailments, she desperately wanted to be attuned to Reiki and eventually Chujiro Hayashi did so in the spring of 1936. By the winter of 1938 she was initiated as a Reiki Master and was the 13th and last Master initiated by Dr. Hayashi before his death in 1941.
Mrs. Takata as a Reiki Master took Reiki firstly to her homeland of Hawaii and then on to the USA. Here she found it difficult to instil the Japanese concept or respect and decided to charge a large sum of money fo Reiki Mastership - $10,000 in order that it should be valued in the West. Whilst one can understand the reasoning, many have felt that this sort of financial undertaking makes reiki too exclusive and out of reach of most people. Many Reiki practioners also feel that it cannot be right to charge very large sums of money for healing in a world which so desperately needs it. For the few who do not value the power of Reiki, surely as the healing energy works through all levels of their being, it can only create a deeper understanding of the truth and value of the energy. Reiki is the greatest teacher.
Upon her death in 1980, Mrs Takata had attuned 22 Reiki masters , her successor and current Grand Master being her granddaughter, Phyllis Furomoto.

Just for today, I will not be angry.
Anger at others or oneself or at the whole world, creates serious blockages in one's energy. It is the most complex inner enemy.
Reiki is an excellent tool to remove anger blockages which have accumulated in the body over years, but it cannot remove the residue of current anger which occurs daily.
Letting go of anger, brings Peace into the Mind.
Just for today, I will not worry.
While anger deals with past and present events, worry deals with future ones. Although worry is not always a negative phenomena, endless worries may fill one's head, and each one bores a small hole in one's body and soul. While anger requires a focused Reiki treatment to remove obstacles, worry requires the energy to be spread throughout the entire body.
Letting go of worry, brings healing into the Body.
Just for today, I will be grateful.
Be grateful from your heart inward. Inner intention is the important element in this principle. Simple things as thanks, forgiveness, smile, good words, gratitude can improve others life and make them happy.
Being thankful brings Joy into the Spirit.
Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
Support yourself and your family respectably, without harming others. Earn a respectable living, live a life of honor.
Working Honestly brings Abundance into the Soul.
Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing.
Honor your parents, honor your teachers, honor your elders.
Being Kind brings Love into the Will.
We are living in times of remarkable opportunities for progress and positive change. Relatively speaking, a few people have a special opportunity to help a great many others.
Reiki is helping to change the world. This silent and peaceful revolution is affecting everyone, not only those who practice Reiki. When we decide to learn and use Reiki regularly, we are doing something very special and meaningful with our lives, something that will also benefit many generations to come.
As we develop our intention to walk the path of living Reiki toward wisdom and self awareness, as Dr. Mikao Usui did, so the whole world will become a more peaceful, nurturing, and supportive community. As more people wish to carry the light of Reiki, regardless of race or religion, and motivated by the wish to benefit others, as Dr. Usui was, so this light will spread and touch the hearts and minds of all living beings, helping to eventually bring and end to ignorance, oppression, and suffering wherever they appear to exist.
There are many paths to personal growth, healing, and inner happiness. Reiki is one of them and can enhance all of them. Reiki thrives on honesty, a good heart, and a willingness to learn. If you want to gain the most from Reiki, just "be" yourself, follow your heart, learn from your own experience, and Reiki will bring the path up to meet you. Personal experience of Reiki is much more valuable than any attempt to explain its origins or categorize it. Use it. Play with it. Share it. Make mistakes with it. Only in this way will you discover your own potential, and the opportunity that Reiki offers you for becoming all that you are.
All the answers to all the problems we will ever encounter are held within our own mind. With the will to change, we can use Reiki to tap into the infinite resources we hold within us and gradually peel away the layers of misunderstanding and confusion that color the way we view "reality".
Buddha taught that "everything depends upon the mind". We can say that happiness depends upon the mind, not on external factors. Understanding this simple truth is the key to solving all our problems. If we begin to walk this path of understanding, with the help of Reiki, it will lead us to greater and greater contentment, inner peace, and the ability to truly benefit others. Nothing is more precious that the wish to change for the better and to improve the quality of our own and other lives by realizing our own true nature.
The main wish of all living beings is to find lasting happiness. If we pursue our goal of complete happiness from within, motivated by the wish to share this infinite wealth with others, there can be no higher purpose to our lives. This is living Reiki.
